666        DE AVIBUS.

Raia piscis inimicus avi rapaci. latos, & aculeatos, Raia dictus reperitur: qui hominem a canibus marinis natantem,
ad devorandum raptum, & suffocatum defendit, nec deserit, donec viderit
eum a periculo evasisse: de cujus clementia, & aliorum crudelitate, plura inferius
Exemplum clementiæ sequendum. ostendentur: vt saltem hinc humana temeritas sese discat comprimere a ferina crudelitate,
nulli inferenda, sed innocentia vbique defendenda. Hic piscis corvum marinum
sub vndas se mergentem, sæpissime ad pastum rapit, ne etiam in aquis careat
vltore suæ rapacitatis.

                                        HæC avis nigerrimi coloris est, rubeam habens cristam,
                                        fortem & altam, rostrum aduncum, & vngulas acutas, de
                                        genere vulturum, aquila grandior: cui in odoratu præsertur,
                                        vt aquila cæteris in acumine visus. Habitat in Aquilonaribus
                                        sylvis, immo saltibus Tridentinis, vbi eam

                                        eius, sive assa fuerit, sive lixa. Nec vnquam facilius capitur,
Modus venaridi eam avem.                                         quam sub vmbra equorum: co scilicet modo, vt eam
                                        sagittare volens in arbore sublimi ( vbi semper quiescit )
necesse habeat secum ducere jumentum ad locum opportunum, vt supra dorsum eius
Pennæ fortes. ab extenta ballista extrudat violentissimam sagittam, latam scilicet in dente, vt pennas
penetret nimis fortes, & condensatas. Nec errante sagitta statim evolat: quia
fragorem auditum existimat a collisione arborum (vt in ventis semper fit ) exiisse, &

percussione alarum. Miro robore valet, ac viribus vngularum: vnde omnem
prædam primo ictu stupefacit. Venatur & aquaticas aves, vt nec evolando, nec se
Pondus prædæ attenditur. submergendo ab eius persecutione sint immunes, pondus observans prædæ vivæ,
