De Scarabeis, Crabronibus, & duplicibus Vespis.

CAP. III.

ETSI cervi volantes de genere scarabeorum habere originem
existimantur, tamen eorum natura purior, &audacior
est in pugna, & virtute medicinali: sylvaticusque scarabeusScarabeus sylvaticus.
dicitur, non stercora comedens, sed folia arborum:
cornua cervorum cornibus in figura similia habent, quæ
sunt mobilia in capite suo: etiam per ipsa apprehendit
& tenet, vti Albertus lib. XII. tractatu tertio cap. VII. Scarabeus cornua oblonga habet.
diffusius attestatur. Cornua igitur illa sylvaticorum scarabeorum
prælonga sunt, bisulcis dentata forcipibus, in
cacumine, cum libuit, ad morsum coëunribus. Infantibus pro amuleto e cervice suspenduntur: Scarabeorum cornua amuleta infantum.
etiam in formam coronæ redada, capitum tegumentis affiguntur, præsertim
adolescentum, quibus præcipue commissa est venatio cornutorum scarabeorum:
frigore latitant in antris. Hos secundum Plin. lib. XI. cap. XXVIII. Lucanos
Nigidius appellat. Aliud rursus eorum genus, qui e fimo ingentes pilas aversisScarabei in stercore vivunt.
pedibus volutant, parvosque in iis contra rigorem hyemis vermiculos fœtus sui nidulantur.
Alii volitant magno cum murmure ac mugitu. Alii focos, & prata crebris
foraminibus excavant, nocturno stridore vocales, maxime in pascuis Aquilonarium
equorum. Sunt etiam in Septentrione oblongi crabrones, quos Plin. eodem lib. cap. Crabrones.
XXI. vespas majores vocat: in volatu & murmure non dissimiles scarabeis, sed
aculeum nocentisissimum habent. Sunt præterea duplices vespæ, minores & majores: Vespæ duplices, quæ piscibus nocent.
Minores scilicet, quæ vermes, muscas, ac araneos grandiores venantur, habitantque
sub tectis, veluti in sacco corticato, quoniam e luto nidos faciunt, in quibus
ceras reponere queant: piscatoribus valde infensæ, quia omnium piscium humorem,
antequam indurescant solis ardore, exugunt. Punctura earumMalvæ solium vesparum puncturam sanat.
rubeum apostema cum vehementi dolore inducit, sed id curatur
solio malvæ apposito, vel potius succo.
