Total amount of the above mentioned prisoners: In 1834 . . . . 2959. — 1838 . . . . 3665 + 706, or 5,95 p.c. annualy. If this number of 3665 be added to the 2016 prisoners in the county- and town-jails on the 1 January 1839, we have a sum of 5681, or 1 in 546 inhabitants. (When the population is calculated at 3,100,439). The expenses have increased in proportion to the increase of prisoners.
