The giant nodded, and his eyes twitched
with the pain as he did so.
“Don’t nod, I know you just wanted to
say you are pleased you have found a man
you can talk to like this, and if you are very
patient and still while I put that tube down
your throat, I will tell you what you and I
are going to do to-morrow morning after
you have had another snatch of sleep.”
The eyes signalled that they wanted to
know at once.
So the Doctor told him that they were
going to help each other to write a letter
home to tell his wife he was getting on quite
well and would soon be home again. The
giant nodded so that the whole bundle of
bandages shook, and the eyes half closed
with pain.
“I told you not to nod,” said the Doctor as
severely as he could, and the eyes begged
pardon at once.
“Won’t he suffer too much to have that
hard tube down his throat again?” said the
nun timidly.
“No, he will stand it much better this
time, and he longs besides for a little water
