our language.–––R. war distinguished as an principal leader in the

general Assembly of the church of Scottland. — It is composed of
representatives from the presbyteries, from the royal boroughs, from
the four Universities and- from the Scotch church of Campvere
in Holland. The whole number of the [MJembers are 364 of
whom 202 are ministers [an]d 162 lay-elders, including in the
lätter class the [mem]bers from the universities. — The annual
sittings of [the] Assembly continue 10 days — but a Committee [o]f
the Whole House, called the commission, has 4 stated meetings in
the year. Under this supreme court there is a series of inferior
judicatories —the lowest the kirksessions or parochial consistories,
composed of the ministers with the lay elders of their respective
parishes. — The ministers of a number of contiguous parishes with
certain repres. from the kirksessions form a presbytery, and a
plurality of presbyteries form a provincial Synod. The Scottish
Church admits of no superiority of one minister above another, but
requires strict obedience to constituted authorities. — During 30
years during which Dr Rob. was a leader in the assemb[ly], [he]
completely succeeded to establish this subordination [wich was]
extremly relaxed. — He defended the patronage or the righft].1
