Denna fatala förväxling- bottnar med all sannolikhet inte bära
i glömd och kanske inte ens helt förstådd läsning av Phosphoros1
utan också av Arndts Historislca kar aktar sskildring ar — se ovan —
väl den tyska upplagan, där vid sidan av Bellman, Ehrensvärd
framställes som en »ej mindre stor och betydelsefull typus av den
svenska karaktären». Hos Arndt finner man i en not redogörelsen för
de många svenska upplagorna av hans arbeten. Arndt, Ekendahls
vän, hade själv Översatt till tyska såväl hans Resa till Italien som
De sköna konsterna filosofi. När Gillies talar om Thorild som
»incomprehensively the more bold and distinguished writer», är det
alls inte omöjligt, att det är Ehrensvärd, han menar. Både
Molbech och Marianne Ehrenström ha helt tappat bort Ehrensvärd.
Han fortsätter emellertid: »Hence arose a most lively contest.
Thorild was soon aided by Hoyer, Oedman, Almquist and
Silfverstolpe. There ensued a war of periodical writers, which, as usual,
had the effect of sharpening the wit on both sides. The Leopold
party had their weekly Literary and Theatrical Journal, in which,
of course, they reduced all their ideas to French line and measure.
This war followed up by their opponents, with ’The Lyceum’ a
monthly publication; ’the Polypheme’, ’The Aurora’» (den finska
Aura? Molbech omnämner Auroraförbundet) »above all, by ’The
Phosphorus’ a monthly Magazine, made up of reviews, prose
narratives, and poetry. The principal contributors to this last were
Atterbome, Palmblad, Endborn (tryckfel för Hedborn, samma
tryckfel förekommer hos Molbech), Elgström, Ingelgren and Sanden (hos
Molbech Sanden, tryckfel för Sondén) all of whom were poets of
extra ordinary and original talent. In particular we should
recommend Atterbome, Ingelgren and Elgström, who, (the latter we
mean) died untimely in 1810. Along with these periodicals must
be reckoned ’The Iduna’, chiefly devoted to histor}7 antiquities; and
’Svea’ edited by Professor Geijer of which the contents are
miscellaneous. But we know few publications more interesting than
’The Phosphorus’ — scarce any one that to a British reader is
so perfetcly novel in character. The first poems that we perused
there, were two short sketches, entitled, ’Kyrke Garden’ (The
churchyard) by Atterbome, in which he has called the imagery of the
later Edda into life, with a degree of passionate melancholy and
imaginative fervour, such as we have rarely seen equalled.» Upp-
