Knute Nelson : To Norway.
and yearning to see what was «beyond the lofty mountains»,
with sad but hopeful hearts, we bade her good by, and turned
our faees to the land of promise to America, and she re
ceived us with open arms and treated us as though we were
her own children by birth right. And this reception and
this treatment was accorded to us, largely because we were the
ofspring of such a noble and worthy mother.
Born in a land of democracy we were more easily
transplanted to, and suitable for the great democracy of the
west. Save than who came from Great Britain, with the
language of the country on their lips, no class of imigrants
who come to the new world, so readily and quickly adopted
themselves to the institutions of America as those who came
from Norway, and none have proved themselves better Citi
zens of their adopted country. And we have allways felt
that the highest honor and the best tribute we could pay to
the landofour birth, was to demonstrate to the land of our
adoption that we are among the best and most loyal of her
citizens. Most us have prospered in one way or an other, in
our new homes at least most of those who have deserved
to prosper. But this prosperty has come to us, not only be
cause our government has been good and the natural re
sources of the country have been great, but because we have
been faithful, diligent, industrious, and persevering traits
inherited by us from the land of our birth. With heart and
saul we join you in celebrating and commemorating this one
hundreth aniversary of your new birth. May the Good
Lord prosper and bless you in the future as in the post, is
the prayer and the hope of all the sons and daughters of
Norway residing in America. —« Da æ got aa fau
