Tacitus och Lucretius, voro mindre
uppmärksammade, (s. 384).

The body of Latin classics
po-tentially available to the twelfth
century was much the same as
that available today, for nothing
of importance has since been lost,
so far as we know, and little has
been transmitted to us by other
means than the manuscripts then
in the libraries of Western Europé.
Potential access does not, however,
mean actual use, for many codices
lay unknown and neglected, and
some texts, like the Germania of
Tacitus and the poems of
Catul-lus, hung by the thread of a single
manuscript then overlooked or
disregarded. Moreover many of
the larger Roman works, such as
Livy’s History, had been pushed
aside by the more convenient
compends of the låter empire, and
others, like Lucretius, which make
a strong appeal to the modern age,
were then little known. (s. 104 f.).
En närmare jämförelse mellan Nordströms framställning
och dess källa visar, hur viktiga reservationer i den senare så gott
som helt försvinner hos Nordström. Det är nog ingen tillfällighet,
att denne ej tagit hänsyn till följande betydelsefulla erinran, varmed
Haskins avslutar den allmänna översikten över den av
medeltiden kända romerska litteraturen: »The literary perspective of
the twelfth century was not that of the Roman Empire or of our
own time, and the difference was one of taste as well as one of
accessibility» \ Även ifråga om de enskilda författarna följer
Nordström Haskins nära.
