THE LÅTE MR ALFRED WILLIAM MACAULAY

It is with the deepest regret that we have to
announce the sudden death, at the early age
of 35, of Mr A. W. Macaulay, Technical
Manager in the service of the Skefko Ball Bearing
Company Limited, Luton, England.

As låte as Saturday, the 29th December, Mr
Macaulay was at the office, apparently in his
usual state of health. In the afternoon of the
same day, however, he was seized with sudden
pain and was found to be suffering from bronchitis
and pleurisy, which increased rapidly in severity
until shortly after 9 on Monday evening, when
he quietly and peacefully passed away.

Mr Macaulay entered the service of the Skefko
Ball Bearing Company, Limited, Luton, as Chief
Draughtsman in August, 1916, and in July, 1921,
he was appointed Technical Manager.

He was a pioneer in the application of roller
bearings to railway rolling stock and to rolling
mill machinery in the United Kingdom, and did
much to further their use in electric traction. He
was considered a leading authority on anti-friction
bearings, and, in addition to superintending and
controlling the technical side of the Company’s
business, he was indefatigable in the missionary
work of spreading among machinery users and
others in the United Kingdom a knowledge of
correct ball bearing principles. The value of his
achievements in this direction cannot be
overestimated.

The greater part of his leisure time was devoted
to the preparation of lectures and the writing of
articles of a very high order technically on ball
and roller bearings and kindred subjects, for
publication, and at the time of his death he was still
engaged in reading the proofs of a work entitled:

»The Ball and Roller Bearing Handbook». This
will be published shortly and deals, in the first
part, with the theoretical aspect of the question,
and in the second part, with the mounting and
maintenance of the bearings.

Among the numerous lectures and papers
delivered by Mr Macaulay in the course of a
very active career, the following have been
published in printed form.: —

»The Endurance of Ball Bearings with
particular reference to Automobile Practice», to the
members of the Institution of Automobile
Engineers.

»Ball and Roller Bearings; their Design and
Performance», to the members of the Institution
of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland.

»Some Developments in Ball and Roller Bearing
Work, with particular reference to Steel Rolling
Mill Plant», to the members of the West of
Scotland Iron & Steel Institute.

»The Elimination of Power Losses and other
Sources of Waste in Mines by the use of Ball and
Roller Bearings», to the members of the
Institution of Mining Engineers.

»Developments of Ball and Roller Bearings», to
the members of the Birmingham Association of
Mechanical Engineers.

In addition to his undeniable industry and
talents Mr Macaulay will always be remembered
by his Colleagues and those with whom he came
in contact during his business career by his
unfailing good humour and kindly disposition. In
spite of the handicap of chronic ill-health he
always had a ready fount of quiet humour,
which, together with his other qualities, endeared
him to all.
