General view

Degerfors was rebuilt to a very great extent. The first blast furnace was started
herein 1862, and was rapidly followed by 6 Lancashire forges and two rolling mills,
one for bar-iron, and the other for fine-iron. Before the Works were able to reap any
advantage from the construction of the North Western main railway line, which was not
completed until 1871, the Company that then owned Lower Degerfors had to go into
bankruptcy (in 1868).

At the subsequent, compulsory sale, Lower Degerfors was bought by the firm of
A. Fröding & Company, of Gothenburg, who transferred the estate in 1871 to the
Degerfors Iron Works Co., Ltd., then lately formed. The said Company also purchased
Upper Degerfors, so as to be able to use the whole of the falls, which had hitherto been
divided between the two works. A very lively period of building now followed. Six
more Lancashire furnaces were built, 2 puddling-furnaces with steam hammers and
several rolling mills, one of which was for blooms of charcoal iron, 2 for rods, one for
heavy plates and one for sheets. On account of the unfavourable general business
conditions at the end of the "seventies" and the beginning of the "eighties ", the Company had
to be reconstructed in 1886 and was incorporated in the present Strömsnäs Iron Works
Co., Ltd., which, with a share capital of 900,000 kronor, took over the old Company’s
debts and assets. The methods of manufacture were partially altered in 1888, when
the first Siemens-Martin furnace and a blooming mill were constructed. A few years
