later, two more Siemens-Martin furnaces were erected. The transition from Lancashire
to ingot metal products was completed in- 1894, when the last Lancashire furnace was
shut down.
THE COMPANY’S LATEST PERIOD OF DEVELOPMENT.
The Strömsnäs Iron Works Co., Ltd., had to struggle against considerable diffi
culties, both of technical and economical nature, during the first ten years of
its existence. The market for Swedish iron works was then exceedingly
depressed. After 1895, however, matters slowly began to improve. A number of
alterations were introduced into the technical, as well as the financial, management.
A man who greatly helped to solve the technical problems, during the Company’s most
critical period, was C. A. Casparsson, C. E. (d. 1919) who, in his day, was one of the
cleverest Siemens-Martin engineers in Sweden. He was employed at Degerfors from
1892 until 1914. The improvements he introduced soon gave evidence of their
worth, by the increased confidence, shown by the ever increasing circle of customers,
in the quality, as well as the quantity, of the Company’s productions, whether it was
a question of deliveries of hard steel or of the softest iron. This has now resulted in
the demands from the home, as well as the foreign market, always being greater than
the Company’s Works can produce, although the production has been tripled.
