The mining district of "Skinnsekijaberg" is mentioned in this letter; thisl is the
same place as the Riddarhyttan ore-field. Different documents show that it was
the State that first commenced mining at Riddarhyttan. Later on, however,
private persons were granted licences to use mines with the woods and estates belonging
to them. In this way Thomas Hammarsmed ("Hammersmith") was granted in 1611
the right to erect here a forge and an iron blast-furnace. It is stated in his
charter or licence that, at an earlier period, there had been a remunerative copper-mill at
this place, but that it had long been deserted. This document proves, however, that
the importance of the iron ores of this field was beginning to be recognised. This
Thomas Hammarsmed is the first known owner, or lessee rather, of Riddarhyttan. Right
up to the middle of the nineteenth century the mining legislation of Sweden did not
allow a person to own a mine unless he worked it uninterruptedly. If this were not
done it was let to somebody else. Special care was taken by the State to keep the mines
that yielded the more precious metal going. In 1616 interest was again shown in the
copper mines at Riddarhyttan and four years later both the copper works and the iron
