THE IRON WORKS AT SANDVIKEN
consist, at present, of the following departments:
The BLAST FURNACE DEPARTMENT, with 4 furnaces
The STEEL-WORKS DEPARTMENT with 6 Siemens-Martin furnaces and 2 bessemer
furnaces;
A HOT ROLLING MILL and a STEAM: HAMMER SMITHY containing: 1 blooming mill,
2 rolling mills for merchant bars and tool steel, 2 strip rolling mills, 1 wire mill, 5 tube
rolling mills, 1 rolling mill for hollow drill-steel, a workshop for galvanizing and
finishing-off of tubes, 11 steam-hammers, up to a weight of 15 tons, and a 2,000 ton forging press;
COLD ROLLING MILLS and WIRE DRAWING DEPARTMENT, with the annealing works
and saw-blade and springs works.
In addition, there are the usual auxiliary industries appertaining to every properly
furnished iron works; in the case of Sandviken, they consist of a well-equipped mechanical
workshops, a foundry, a building- and pattern shop and workshops for plate and
blacksmith work, all of which work principally to supply Sandviken’s own needs.
PIG IRON, BESSEMER AND SIEMENS-MARTIN STEEL.
For the blowing of pig-iron nothing but charcoal is employed. Mention has already
been made of the Company’s ores.
