gardens, the area of which varies between 600 and 1,400 square metres (6,500 and 15,000
square feet) each. The Company procures building loans for its workmen in order to
encourage and support this " own home " system.

The industrial centre of Sandviken, with a total population of about 11,000
inhabitants, has three doctors, one of whom is in the service of the Company. He has in his
charge a well equipped hospital and surgery, the former containing 14 beds. Consumptive
workmen who have been in the service of the Company are sent, gratis, by the firm
to a sanatorium which it has established. There is a well appointed warm bath-house
at Sandviken.

The daughters of the employees are trained, free of charge, at a school of domestic
economy erected by the Company in 1906. There also exists a free reading room. A large
hall was erected in 1908 for meetings, lectures, theatrical and other performances. In
1913 there was opened a wash-house erected by the Company for its employees, where
washing can be done in one fourth of the time usually required for the work, and at about
the same price. In 1916 a "Welfare Office" was opened, for the purpose of attending
to the interests of the staff, foremen, hands and pensionaries of the Company.

Aged workmen, and the widows and children of the Company’s former employees are
provided for at a Pension fund which was established in 1883. Every workman places a
