Foundry at Österby.

LANDED PROPERTY, FORESTS, SOCIAL CONDITIONS, &c.

The total area of the Company’s landed estates amounts to 112,500 hectares (280,000
acres = 440 sq. miles). Of this, 13,500 hectares (33,000 acres) are tilled land or
fenced pasturage, 83,000 hectares (208,000 acres) of productive timber land, and 16,000
hectares (40,000 acres) of more or less waste land. The greater part of the cultivated
property is let to tenants, but the Company, however, carries on the largest farming
industry in the country, combined with mills and dairy-farming. The number of cattle
owned by the Company amounts to about 700 horses and some 2,000 head of cattle.
