LULEÅ JÄRNVERK

(THE LULEÅ IRON WORKS.)

IN the two northernmost provinces of Sweden most of the land belongs to the
State. There is, however, one timber concern that owns extensive forest estates
in this part of the country, viz., Aktiebolaget Ytterstfors-Munksund, one of the largest
concerns in its branch in the whole of Sweden. Since 1918 the Company has also been
the owner of the Luleå Iron Works, and, consequently, carries on both an iron industry
and a timber trade, a combination which is quite natural in Sweden with its
manufacture of charcoal iron.

Luleå Iron Works are situated at Carlsvik, in the town and harbour of Luleå.

The establishment of the Luleå Iron Works was a direct consequence of the
revolutionizing inventions made in the concentration of iron ores at the close of the eighties
of last century by a prominent Swedish mining engineer, Johan Gustaf Gröndal. By
