Att klättra i Sylfjället är ingen lätt sak och är ofta förenadt med
fara, därför att fjället är öfversålladt med lösa stenar äfven på de
brantaste ställen. Råkar en enda sten att lossna, drar den merendels flere
med sig och föranleder ofta svåra ras, hvarvid den vållande äfven kan
få göra sällskap.
Då trafiken i Sylfjället årligen tilltager och tillbud till olycksfall
rätt ofta förekomma, anser jag mig böra varna en hvar Sylbestigare
för vårdslöshet under klättring i fjället. Undersök noga stenarnes läge
och bärkraft, innan de användas som stöd för händer och fotter! Fyra
af mig här ofvan omnämnda bestigningar anser jag af nu anförda skäl
farliga, nämligen 3:e piken på Templet, 3:e klippan emellan Slottet och
utsprånget, fjällväggen ofvanför glaciären på norra sidan om utsprånget
samt Storsylen på södra sidan, allra högst upp. Endast erfarna
bergklättrare böra försöka sig på dessa punkter. Af det ofvan sagda
framgår för öfrigt, att farliga punkter finnas öfverallt i fjället.
En allvarlig varning bör äfven uttalas emot beträdande af
glaciären utan att nödiga försiktighetsmått iakttagas, framför allt
begagnande af rep och isyxa. På flera ställen upptäckte jag stora hål
och sprickor, som endast täcktes af en tunn snöskorpa.
En bepröfvad alpinist, mr Joseland från England, hvilken i augusti
besökte Sylfjället, lämnar i fjolårets novembernummer af »The Alpine
Journal» följande beskrifning öfver sin bestigning af Sylfjället:
»Storsylen (1,762 m.). First Ascent by the E. glacier. August 8.
—Mr. H. L. Joseland, with Jakob Fjellberg, started from Sylhyddan
at 10 A. M., and followed the route usually taken in ascending Storsylen
till within sight of the E. glacier. They passed to the S. of the little
lake at its foot, and mounted the glacier by its S. side, considerable
step-cutting being necessary. On reaching the rock aréte running from
Storsylen S. towards Storsola they found the lower part of the ridge
impracticable, owing to the masses of ice on the rocks, and were
compelled to attack the very steep rock face somewhat to the N. of
the S. end of the aréte. After a climb of two or three hundred feet,
rendered very difficult by de amount of ice that had to be cleared
from every rock, they gained the crest of the aréte, and followed it
to the summit of the peak. The last few feet of rock are very steep,
though not difficult. The summit was gained at 4 p. m., after about
5 hrs. of actual going, of which more than 2 hrs. were spent ön the
iced rocks above the glacier. The descent to Sylhyddan was made by
the ordinary route.
The expedition is recommended to any who may be in the
neighbourhood, as, though under ordinary conditions it would involve no
difficulty, it is interesting and affords splendid views of the fine
precipices of Storsylen.» W.
