| Eric Trulson From olden times the episcopal cities had been the chief centres of spiritual culture. After the reforms of the 16th century, the gymnasia (higher schools) became the educational centres appropriate to the new age. The first one was founded in Västerås in 1620, under the direction of Bishop Johannes Rudbeckius, to whom a statue by Milles has been raised in the shadow of the cathedral tower. |
