VOCABULARY

192, With blank unspeculative eyes . . .
IV, 261, Like kindled lights in untempestiious heaven . . .
265, A woman armed makes war upon herself,

Unwomanlike . . .
354, . . . nor moved of mine own will,
Unmaidenlike.

The last two formations have been substituted for
the already existing unwomanly, unmaidenly.

A change of meaning, I think, occurs in the
following instance (Ave atque Vale, to the memory of
Baudelaire):

III, 56, Mourns thee of many his children the last dead,
And hallows with strange tears and alien sighs
Thine unmelodious mouth and sunless eyes . . .

[—• unable to form melodies .

In the combination un- -ful, the prefix and the suffix
are sometimes used to neutralize the meaning of one
another, thus being used instead of the simple suffix -less.

III. 178, Keeps watch beneath unchangeful skies . . .

IV, 129, Unwittingly, with nnpresageful eyes,

For the last time.

Finally, in the combination un- -able, which gives
several new formations, we sometimes find a stronger
meaning than is usual.

I, 32, Love loathed of love and mates urunatchable.

[C. D. = unparalleled.

III, 204, ... a greed everlasting of blood

Unslakable ever with slaughter . . .

IV, 270, Among men armed a woman, foreign born,

Virgin, not like the natural flower of things
That grows and bears and brings forth fruit and dies . . .
Unlovable, no light for a husband’s house,
Espoused.

probably - unable to loveJ.
351, A stain of blood unpurgeable with tears.

The ’stressing’ is specially perceptible in the first and
the third case: all the cases are new formations.
