som framställde huru de och deras grannar balanserade
på ett rep in till staden. Först såg man herr Silvander
med familj, sedan grannarna med sina barn och sist
herr och fru Nonnen med döttrar. Alla gingo i ängslig
oro, svängande armarna och sviktande i benen över
dy och vatten och under stodo följande humoristiska
verser:
We are not like sylphs of airy form
Nor like the fiery salamander,
Nor mermaids riding on the storm,
How shall we get to town, Silvander?
If we were birds through air we’d skim,
If we were frogs on mud we’d wander,
If we were fishes we would swim,
But now what shall we do, Silvander?
The difficulties are so great
That even the glorious Alexander
Would have turned back overcome by fate,
How then shall we get through, Silvander?
I know that you are not of stone,
Surely your heart has feelings tender,
You will be softened by our groan
And you will mend the road, Silvander.
Then when through all the autumn long
Dry shod and clean to town we wander,
We will greet you with a song
And bless you all the way, Silvander.
But if you leave us in the mire,
Think how your fair fame it will slander,
Be sure our ghosts will never tire
But haunt you night and day, Silvander!
