79. Oscarsborg. I Sandet ligeoverfor Drøbak
ligger Kaholinen, paa hvilken er opført Søfæstningen
Oscarsborg, hvis Bestemmelse er at forsvare
Indsei-lingen til Christiania. I dens Befæstninger er Plads
for 800 Mand.

S3. Carljohiiiistærn. Ladestedet Horten med
Carljohansværns Værft ligger 8 Mil i Syd for
Christiania, med en fortrinlig Havn, der dannes af
florten-tangen, Falkenstenslandet og Øerne Vealøs og
Lrw-øerne. Indtil 183G var Horten et ubetydeligt
Strand-sted med kun 200 Indb., men har siden det blev
Hovedstation for den norske Orlogsflaade hævet sig, og
tæller nu 5,500 Indvaanere. Værftet, hvor d.r bygges
Skibe saavel af Træ som Jern, har 4 Beddinger og en
Skibsdok, et mekanisk Værksted og en tekuisk Skole,
der uddanner de til Værkstedet fornødne Arbeidere.
Stedet har stærke Befæstninger saavel paa Fastlandet
som paa Øerne, en Søkrigsskole, en Ko.psskole, en
Realskole, et Olservatorium og et Musæum. I de
senere Aar ei Horten ogsaa blevet et meget besøgt
Badested.

known as containing one of the most frequented
bathing establishments in the North of Europe. The
Department comprising sulphur and sea-water baths - kept
open from June lst to August 31st—is visited by nearly
1,000 patients a year. The Environs of Sandefjord are
everywhere hilly, and abound in lovely little bits o!
scenery; for tourists, too, studying geognastisc and
geological matters, this is a rich field of observation;
for, in several localities, more especially on the const,
you meet with remarkable Giant Caldrons and striæ. —
The following pedestrian excursions and other trips
should be noted: 1) Across the farm of Hjertnæs, the
property of the Baths (passing en route the 4 „Bauta
steno"), where there is a beautiful view of the fjord;
or along „Strandveien", as far as Iljertnæs’s Udmark
(unenclosed land), a gently ascending, finely wooded
ridge, and still farther up it—the prospect is fine
here till you come to the three giant caldrons,
discovered and dug out in 1873: they are regarded as
some of the most remarkable of their kind. They lie
side by side, about 150 feet above the sea; the largest
is 23 feet deep and 2’/4 feet in diameter at the top,
about 5 feet at the bottom. 2) From „Strandveien"
to the farm of Stub, on the west side of the Fjord,
and from thence to Randinge,i, so to the „Bautastenene"
at Hystad, and to „ Djævleporten" (th devils entrance).

3) To Mokollen, in a northerly direction, past the
parsonage over Dolebakken, from the summit of which
there is an enchanting view of the town and fjord

4) To Kamfjordvarden, 350 feet high, but easy to
