Throndhjem.
rimeligt var — den første Kathedral, der blev bygget
paa det Sted, hvor Hellig Olafs Lig havde været jordet;
— dette var den første Begyndelse til ISi-)
Throndhjems* I&omkirke. Denne Kathedralkirke indviedes
henimod 1093 og fik Navnet Kristkirken. Her blev
St. Olafs Skrin hensat over Høi alteret, der var anbragt
just paa det Sted, hvor Kapellet havde staaet og hvor
Legemet havde været begravet. Haialteret har
igjennem alle Omskiftelser og Forandringer beholdt sin
Plads uforandret til den Dag idag, og „St. Olafs Brønd"
findes anbragt i Høikorets sydlige Mur. Denne Olaf
Kyrres Kristkirke, der igjennem flere Byggeperioder
omsider udfoldede sig til den prægtige Domkirke, var
rimeligvis en Langkirke med et enkelt Skib og et
halvrundt Kor, omtr 75 Alen lang og 20 Alen bred.
I mindst 60 Aar efter Olaf Kyrres Død har Kristkirken
været uforandret. I denne Tid blev tre Konger jordede
der, nemlig Haakon Magnussøn og Olaf og Eystein
Magnus sønn er. Allerede tidligere var Magnus den
Godes Skrin flyttet derhen, og Olaf Kyrre jordet der.
Under Harald Gilles Sønner indtraf en Begivenhed,
der var af stor Betydning for Norge i det Hele, og
særlig for Nidaros og dens Kristkirke, nemlig
Oprettelsen af et Erkebispedømme i Norge 1152. Dette fik
da naturligvis sit Sæde ved Nationalhelligdommen i
Nidaros. Nu maatte da først og fremst Kristkirken
bringes i en ny og prægtigere Stand. Det var dog
først under den tredie Erkebiskop Eystein Erlandssøn
(1161 — 1188), at Værket for Alvor blev paabegyndt.
Eystein tilbyggede et Tverskib eller et Udspring paa
hver Side af det store Taarn, samt den isolerede Byg-
w egi an kings, the seat of the scientific Society and
the Bank of Norway, she is of great importance to
Norway; aud as the royal and archipiscopal residence
in ancient times, with her noble cathedral and
world-renowned saint, and as the scene of many
striking-episodes, her influence, as an element of Norwegian
history, is greater still.
The ancient name of the city was Nidaros, that
of Throndhjem being applied to all "Thröndernes
Fylker," or the region bordering on the
Throndhjems-fjord, at that time "the pith and marrow of the land."
Not till the fifteenth century do we find the name of
Throndhjem applied to the city instead of Nidaros.
The site of the city was in the very midst of the
Thröndelag, and the best that could possibly be chosen.
The river Nid, in the nether part of its course, makes
a wide sweep to the south, floving in a northerly
direction, till it empties its waters into the
Throndhjem sfjord. On the peninsular projection Nidarnces,
formed by the river, in the south and east, and the
Throndiijemsljord in the north, the city of Nidaros
was founded. In the west, where a narrow strip of
land connects the peninsula with the main-land, lies
Ilevolden, on which fortifications had been erected as
early as the 12th century. Kalvskindet is the name
of an open tract, stretching from here along the river
in a south-easterly course. The south-eastérly
extre-mity of the peninsula at the mouth of the river, bears
the name of Bratören; at this place the famous
Öre-thing is held. In the east, there is a bridge over the
river to Baklandet. Olaf Trygvesön was the first Nor-
