Til Erindring om Kong Oscars Nærværelse er der paa
Toppen opført en Støtte af huggen Granit.
151. Fra Kjelvik gaar Touren ind gjennem den
brede, 12 Mil dybe Porsangerfjord, som ialfald i
den ydre Del ved sine golde Fjelde af samme
ensformige Høide gjør et trist Indtryk. Ingen Afvexling
fryder her Øiet, alt er graat i graat; de faa hist og
her omspredte Lappegammer ere neppe synlige mod
den graa Mark; Alt tyder paa Ishavets umiddelbare
Nærhed. Magerøen er nemlig Norges sidste større 0,
og fra nu af er Kysten aaben mod Nordenvindens al
frodigere Vegetation dræbende Indvirkning. Kun
enkelte i Ly liggende Steder, som Bepvaag (4 Mil fra
Kjelvik) kan frembyde en rigere, om end tarvelig
Flora. Bepvaag er godt bebygget. Længere inde i
Fjorden tabe Omgivelserne mere af sin vilde Karakter,
de bratte, for den hele nordlige Kyst saa
karakteristiske Styrtninger gaa mere og mere over til Lier, der
ere klædte med friskt Grønt og smaa Birkeskove.
14«. Ved Indseilingen til Anløbssted Kjøllefjord
(8 Mil fra Lebesby), passeres de saakaldte Finkirker,
to mindre og en større Klippe af eiendommelig Form,
der tidligere skulle have været dyrkede af de hedenske
Lapper.
149. Vardö, beliggende paa Øen Vardö, der ved
Busesund skilles fra Fastlandet, er Kjøbstad fra 1787
af og har 1,500 Indbyggere. Fra Begyndelsen af et
Fiskevær, var Vardø under Finmarkens Velmagtsperiode
et af denne Landsdels vigtigste Steder, til hvis
Beskyttelse en Fæstning, som blev kaldet Vardöhus, her blev
anlagt. Som alle Finmarkens Handelssteder forfaldt
låt The island of Mcigerö. seen from Gjesvær,
presents a somewhat rugged appearance; one of the
most remarkable fjelds is Graakolden. on the south
shore of the Tue f jord, at the mouth of which Gjesvær,
is situated. Fine weather must necessarily be chosen
for an excursion to the North Cape, for you have
not only to round the Knivskjælodden, you must also
double the Cape, which is accessible only from a little
creek on the eastern shore, called Hornviken, the
name having its origin in a stronge protuberance on
the lower part of the slope, resembling a horn on the
brow of the rocky headland. It is not seen in the
woodcut, the view having been taking from another
point. The ascent from here is exceedingly difficult,
though, on the occasion of King Oscar’s visit in 1873,
many obstacles were removed. Having worked your
way for some 900 feet or more up through the loose
stones, along the bank of a streamlet, you reach the
plateau; and a few paces farther on, at the greatest
altitude, the surface of the rock (mica slate) is hard,
dry, and level. The highest point of the plateau is
976 feet, and the outermost edge, where the cape,
sinks abruptly into the sea. is not two feet lower. Here
the mountain wall projects forward in places; standing
on the extreme edge of the rock, you can follow it till
about the middle of the eminence, when the eye rests
upon the ocean beneath, whose billows are heard
dashing against the mighty headland. To the south the
prospect is obstructed by the loftier parts of
Mager-öen; in the west you sight the Hjelmesoen and
Rolf-söen summits; in the east you have the long outline
