betonande av rederiernas och
befrak-t.arnas önskemål.1 Föredragshållarna,
varav en representant för
konsulterande ingenjörerna, en för
skeppsvarven och en för rederierna,
uppehöllo sig därvid ganska ingående vid
"Side Ports"’, vilka betecknades som
ett framsteg vid konstruktion av
fartyg för ekonomisk hantering av last.
Följande synpunkter framfördes bl. a.,
vilka här citeras på originalspråket,
enär genom översättning en del ord
och vändningar lätt skulle förlora i
tydlighet:
"Side ports are not always
economi-cal. A throrough analysis must be
made in each case to determine the use
to which the side port will be put in
the particular service in which the ship
is to operate and to determine the
eco-nomies in cost and ship’s time
result-ing."

"The use of side ports is in line with the method
used in every other case where package freight is
handled. Box cars are loaded through side doors, freight
is handled into and out of warehouses and pier sheds
through side doors, motor trucks are loaded at the
side or at the end, etc."

"Side ports make possible the speeding of ship’s
dispatch beyond the capacity of ships equipped with
overall hatchers only. A larger number of men may
be worked because the gängs are not limited by the
speed of the hook and the handling of the unequal
amounts of cargo stowed in the various holds is
equalized.
An Eastern Steamship Line steamer recently loaded
1100 tons of general cargo into a side port ship in six
hours, 183 tons an hour. lf loading through hatches
had been worked, this rapid loading would not have
been attained.
A ship ön the Great Lakes dicharged 2 200 tons of
flour and other mill stuffs in seven hours. Again the
straight line production principle of handling cargo
through side ports brought results that would have been
impossible to attain with overall hatches.
Handling through side ports lowers the cost per
ton möre than is possible when handling cargo through
hatches. One authority states that, by handling cargo
through side ports, 30 per cent can be saved and that
claivvs will be reduced 30 per cent and points out that
an important economy is the reduction in overtime.
Any change in methods or equipment that reduces
overtime has over one third greater effect than a change
that reduces straiyfit time costs.
