Kunna uppgifterna personaltransporter andra stycket Söderbloms
handbrev 9 juli1 givas offentlighet. Detta vore värdefullt då officiella
kommunikén här givit intryck våra eftergifter större än verkligheten. Jämför
vårt telegram 17 juli.2

Stockholm, 19th July, 1940.
Your Excellency,
I have the honour to inform you, under instructions from His Majesty’s
Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, that His Majesty’s
Government in the United Kingdom take a grave view of the décision of
the Swedish Government, of which Your Excellency inf ormed me on July
7th, to allow German troops and war material to cross Swedish territory.
His Majesty’s Government regard this as a flagrant breach of the
neutra-lity which they themselves have taken care to respect.
At the same time I am imstrueted to protest against the action taken
against the book »Why Britain is at War» by The Honourable Harold
Nicolson, M.P., a member of His Majesty’s Government, which has
en-joyed a wide circulation since the beginning of the war and has been
published in Sweden in the Swedish language in a specially abridged form
designed to comply with the Swedish Government’s susceptibilities. In the
view of His Majesty’s Government this book can only have been banned
by the Swedish Government at the direct instigation of the German
Government.
His Majesty’s Government therefore protest strongly against these acts,
the first om which amounts to direct assistance to their enemy. They believe
that the cause for which they are fighting is appreciated in Sweden and
they for their part have no désire to préjudice the friendly relations which
have subsisted between Sweden and the United Kingdom. The Swedish
Government must, however, réalise that if they persist in their present
