Justice to the memory of Bering, I mtist say, that he has delinated the coast
very well, and fixed the latitude and longitude of the points better than could
be expected from the Methods he had to go by. This judgment is not formed
from Mr. Muller’s account of the voyage, or the chart prefixed to his book,
but from Dr. Campbell’s account of it in his edition of Harris’ Collection and
a map there to annexed, which is both more circumstantial and accurate than
that of Mr. Muller. Det Kaart, Cook her omtaler, er en Copi af Berings eget
hos D’Auville. — Om Østkap siger Cook: I must conclude as Bering did
before me, that this is the most Eastern point af Asia. S. 470.
36) Se f. Ex. Stellers forskjellige Arbejder, men særlig Fortalen til
Kamtschatkas Beskrivelse, hvori det hedder, at Bering kom tilbage »ohne doch
das geringste entdecket zu haben«. Fortalen er skreven af J. B. S. (Scherer).
37) I Petermanns Mittheilungen. 1879. S. 163 siger Dr. Lindemann, at
Bering vendte om, »ohne seltsamer Weise weder die Diomed-Inseln, noch die
amerikanische Kiiste gesehen zu haben«. Jeg formoder, at Forfatteren støtter
sig til W. H. Dall, en højst uheldig Historieskriver. Han siger: »Bering,
naturally timid, hesitating, and indolent, determined to go no farther for fear
of being frozen in, and returned through the Strait — strange to say —•
with-out seeing the Diomedes or the American coast«. — Alaska and its resources.
