I retain the diary form of my narrative in
order that readers purposing to go over the same
ground may see the extent of our daily progress,
and thus learn the practical possibilities of
ordinary Norwegian travelling. I must, however,
add that we travelled leisurely. A single tourist
or a small party of two or three might do a
good deal more—with pushing perhaps fifty per
cent. more. Our numbers rendered the halt at
most of the stations much longer, on account
of the necessity of sending to a distance for
supplementary horses.
There are two classes of stations, “fast" stations
and “forbud” stations. The first are bound to
