The fact that the Swedish forests give such large return in proportion to their
area (as is shown by the preceding table) must be ascribed to the combined results
obtained from scientific forestry and highly developed industries, although a third,
and equally important factor, is formed by the rich possibilities of utilizing the
produce of the forests, offered so bouuteouslv by the numerous rivers of the country.
Large numbers of these streams run through the forest territories, and allow,
everywhere in northern Sweden, of the lumber being transported to the saw mills by means
of floating. The Swedish floating channels have a total combined length of 30,000
kilometres (18,000 miles) or considerably more than half the circumference of the globe.

Sweden in our days, therefore, makes good its claim, even more than ever
before, to be considered as the principal exporter of forest products. It is true that in
Russia there exist, inter alia, possibilities that, in the future, may enable that country
to dispute the pride of place with Sweden, but the superior quality of the Swedish
products will always create a great demand for them in the international market.

The industries that obtain their raw materials from the forests and which have
been placed together in this Directory are the

Wood goods Industry
Joinery Industry
Wood Pulp Industry
Cellulose Industry
Paper Industry
Wood Distillation Industry.

The Directory now placed before the reader, and the first that brings together in
one place the various manufacturers in Sweden of the products of the forests, will,
we feel confident, satisfy a long felt want on the part of the foreign consumer of
such articles.
