PAPER INDUSTRY

^T^IIE history of the Paper Industry i Sweden goes back many centuries. As we
I learn from old documents, several of the Swedish Paper Mills obtained their
“privileges”, or licence, during the 18:th centuiy, some of them even as early as in
the 17:th. During this early period, paper was manufactured of rags, at handmills
many of which are still in existence. However only when the wood-pulp industry began
to come into force, during the early decades of the 19:th century, paper-making in this
country became a modern industry on a large scale. The first paper-making machine
in Sweden was erected about 1840.

In order to illustrate the increasing commercial importance for Sweden of the
paper-manufacture in this country, it may be of interest to give some figures showing the
growing production during the last few decades:

1891 1900 1913

Paper............. 19,360 tons 50,050 tons 189,612 tons

Cardboard ... 2,481___________________»______________8,527 »___25,917 »

Total 21,841 tons 58,577 tons 215,529 tons

The following table gives the average total value of the paper- and cardboard
export for the following quinquennial periods:

1861/65....................Swed. Kronor 143,800 (£ 8,000)

1886/90..................... » » 16,017,900 (£ 995,000)

1906/10..................... » » 29,045,800 (£ 1,610,000)

The value of the exports during 1913, i. e., the last year before the Great YVar,
amounted to Kronor: 42,082,900 (£ 2,333,000).

The tremendous development of the wood goods industries of Sweden during the
last one or two decades of the last century and the first two decades of the present
one, forms one of the most prominent features of the economic life of this country.
The excellent quality of the Swedish paper should be a guarantee that we shall be able
to meet all coming competition with equanimity, and the boundless resources of the
Swedish forests should enable the nation to meet the future with feelings of unshaken
confidence.
