however and when, during the latter half of the last century, these enactments had come fully
into force, the Company turned its attention to scientific forestry and to the creation
of a wood goods industry in the modern sense of the term, accompanied by an
extensive export.

The iron manufacture, however, has, for ages past, been intimately connected with
the timber industry and to such an extent that, for long periods, the forests were
actually reserved for the purpose of supplying the iron works with charcoal. At such
places, therefore, where there existed a supply of timber, and a river that could
give the necessary motive power, there arose a little iron works, the necessary ore
