HISTORY.

bHEN, during the first half of the nineteenth century, the Swedish wood goods
V T industry, began a period of prosperity, Gothenburg became the centre of the
trade. The chief customer of Swedish forest products was then, as now, England, and
wood goods export, therefore, was directed chiefly via that city. It is, we imagine,
in this fact that we have to look for the cause of the wood industries in Sweden
at that period being located in those districts for which Gothenburg was the natural
trading centre and port of shipment. We find, for example, that, even as early as the
period 1820—1850, the Swedish forest industries were extensively developed in the
im-mence and well wooded tracts around the north of lake Vänern and especially, at that
time, in the province of Värmland, a territory which possesses the qualifications necessary
for the trade in question, as its forest districts are specially rich in wood industries
and as the timber is amongst the best produced in the country. From north to
south the province is traversed by a large number of streams which not only make
cheap transport possible by the floating of the timber from the woods to the saw mills,
but also supplies motive power for these works. In addition, the shipment of the wood
goods when ready for export has long been carried out via lake Vänern, the
Troll-hätte canal down to the seaport of Gothenburg. The canal just mentioned has lately
