PRODUCTION.

The company’s total production amounts to 25,0U0—30,000 standards, yearly, the
greater part of which is further manufactured by the company itself into box material.

The company’s box manufacture is carried on in accordance with a special
method, of which the company possesses the sole rights. At an early date the company
acquired the patent for the manufacture of the Torroba Boxes, as they are called,
and has since perfected the method by means of experiments and investigations, so
that, at the present day, the Torroba Boxes may claim without exaggeration to be
the best to be found anywhere. They have, in consequence, obtained a very large
market both in Europe and in trans-atlantic countries.

A short account of the method of manufacture and the characteristics of these
boxes may be of interest. The different parts of the Torroba Boxes — tops, bottoms,
ends and sides — are supplied, whatever the breadth may be, in entire pieces,
manufactured by joining several boards. But what distinguishes the Torrabo Box from
similar makes of boxes is, that the Torroba-dovetail grooves and tongues are made to fit
together wedge-like in a longitudinal direction, that is, both the dovetailed tongue and
the corresponding dovetailed groove are made to narrow off somewhat in the
longitudinal direction of the board. Consequently, the tongue can easily be inserted into the
groove without scraping or forcing the glue out by pressure, as the case is with
ordinary dovetailing with parallel edges. It is not before the tongue of the Torroba Box
material has been almost entirely introduced into the groove that it is pressed together,
the glue being thereby forced into the pores of wood along the whole length of
the board. The joint, consequently, becomes stronger than the board itself, and, as a
result, the Torroba Boxmaterial can be made thinner and lighter, yet, at the same

time stronger, than that of any other make of boxes.

In order to have the strength of the boxes tested by independent authorities the
company has had breaking tests carried out at the Chalmer Technical Institute,
Gothenburg. The results of these tests are shown by the accompanying illustrations.

The (liferent types broke at a pressure of:

Type N:o 1 .................. 413—480 kg. (926—1,080 lbs.)

„ 2 .................. 776—849 „ (1,746—1,910 lbs.)

„ 3 .................. 941—1.048,, (2.117—2.358 lbs.)
