HELLEFORS BRUKS AKTIEBOLAG

HISTORY.
ONE of the oldest enterprises in the Swedish Bergslagen (i. e. the central mining
district of the country) is that of Hellefors Bruk not far from Filipstad. As
is the case with the greater number of the Swedish Iron Works, it was the occurrence
of ore in the vicinity of water power that led to the establishment of an iron
industry in this place. Silver ore was found at Hellefors at the beginning of the 17:th
century and in 1639 mining operations were commenced. The Swedish [-Government-] {+Govern-
ment+} which, at that time, entertained a lively interest for the utilization of the
rare finds of precious metals in the country, supported the enterprise by all the
means in its power. The vein of silver ore, howerer, was rather small, and was
soon exhausted, but in its place there was discovered in the forest districts around
Hellefors large and valuable fields of iron ore. The mining of these was begun
during the eighteenth century, and a number of blast furnaces and bar iron forges
were erected in the neighbourhood. The large forest estates owned by the works
