Fredriksberg Cellulose Works.

were employed for the production ot’ charcoal for the smelting of iron ore. At the

close of the same century a couple of small saw mills driven by water power were

also erected.

The ’iron manufacture, however, remained the most important industry at Helle-

fors for more than another hundred years, and it was first during the latter half of

the nineteenth century, when forest products began to obtain a hitherto unthought-of
value, that the wood goods industries at the works commenced to occupy a somewhat
predominant position. Since that time, the Company’s production of wood goods has
rapidly developed, so that, at the present day, Hellefors Works is one of the largest
manufacturers of wood goods and wood pulp in central Sweden. This development is
closely connected with the process of consolidation which lias taken place during the
last few years in the iron industries lying at the border between the provinces of
Värmland, Västmanland and Dalecarlia, and which has led to the creation of the so-called
» Wargö » concern.
