ginal one. By bringing under cultivation for the first time, a desolate uninhabited
forest district there was created a splendid landed estate, of inestimable value for the
unfailing support and well-being of the workmen and their families at a period when
the want of proper communications would otherwise have placed the greatest [-difficulties-] {+diffi-
culties+} in the way of providing for the employees.

The estates purchased included extensive forests and waterfalls, resources which,
at a later date, have proved the firm support of the company during periods that

threatened the welfare of the iron industry, and which have made possible the rapid

development that has taken place during the last few decades. ;

A testamentary disposition made by Geijer transformed the Uddeholm Ironworks
for long succession of years into a kind of entailed estate in the family. This
condition of things lasted until I860, but in 1870 the business was turned into a Joint
Stock Company in the modern sense of the term.

It would, of course, be too cireumstancial, and altogether outside the scope of
this article, to follow in detail the development of the Uddeholm "Works, and nothing
will be given now hut a few dates of some greater importance. Special attention may
be directed to the great development of the business under the management of Jonas
Wærn in the middle of the 19th century. It was then that Munkfors "Works were
