of manufacture and transport arrangements are concerned, are probably among the
most perfect and up-to-date wood-manufacturing establishments in Europe. At the saw
mills there is a 12-frame saw, electrically driven, with a timber yard, and an electric
railway connecting the two establishments. The sulphite works has a yearly
capacity of 15,000 tons, chiefly bleached pulp. The sulphate works can produce 20,000 tons
of sulphate cellulose, of which about one half can be bleached and the remainder
further manufactured into Kraft pulp. There are also a sulphite spirit factory, a
methyl alcohol factory, and an ether factory, besides an electro-chemical works for
the manufacture, by electric methode, of chloride of lime for the bleaching of the
cellulose and also for selling purposes, and of caustic soda. Large and commodous
harbour arrangements, with quays, etc., have also been built at Skoghall, where the
largest ships that can pass through the Trollhatte Canal can lie conveniently to load
and discharge cargo.

IRON INDUSTRY.

The Uddeholm Company owns ironworks at Hagfors, Munkfors, Nykroppa,
Stor-fors and Brattfors.

At Hagfors there are five electric blast furnaces, built during 1911—1918. The power
for these furnaces is obtained from the Company’s own power stations. The production
amounted in 1918 to 26,771 tons, with only four blast furnaces running. At
Hag-fors there are in addition: a Bessemer Works, four 15-tons Siemens Martin furnaces,
two ferro-manganese furnaces, blooming-, intermediate- and merchant iron rolling
mills (the latter driven exclusively by electricity), a mechanical workshop and foundry,
and a factory for the manufacture of screws of iron and brass.

At Munkfors a part of the material produced at Hagfors is further treated.
There are two 8-ton Siemens Martin furnaces and four hot rolling mills. In addition,
there is at Munkfors a factory for the production of all kinds of springs, harrow- and
rake pegs, etc.; a wire drawing- and nail factory and magnificent cold rolling mills for
the production of cold rolled steel for various purposes.

Nykroppa Steelworks and Storfors Tube Mills were formerly the property of
the Storfors Bruks Aktiebolag. The Uddeholm C:o obtained a share-majority in 1909,
after which a complete fusion of the two firms was effected in 1918, and the Storfors
Company was dissolved. At Nykroppa there are two blast furnaces, three Siemens
Martinfurnaces, blooming-, intermediate- and merchant iron rolling mills, a steam hammer
