77,000 Kr., for the year 1909 about 116,000 Kr., about 81,000 Kr. of the latter amount
representing the profit of an affiliated company. Radical steps were again taken to
place the concern on a better footing by the introduction of modern business
organization, the control of the manufacture and by the best methods of running the factory.
These proved successful and the following years showed more and more favourable results.

The development of the company’s manufacture of sulphite pulp at Billerud is best
evident from the following survey:

in 1884 .............................. 454 tons

» 1888 2,283 »

» 1893 3,600 »

» 1898 8,100 »

the works were burnt down in 1899

in 1903 ............................ 9,400 tons

» 1908 10,300 »

» 1913 11,000 »

Simultaneously with the above mentioned
endeavours to reorganize the concern,
extensive wooded proporties were being acquired.

The company’s leading men had realised
that, in order to put the company’s business
on a sound footing, it was necessary for them
to acquire their own supplies of timber at
a reasonable price. A distinct purchasing
policy was therefore inaugurated.

As early as in 1900 Billerud acquired the Stomne Works Company, Ltd., who
owned the estates of Stomne and Solje, situated on the Glafs Fjord, with their large forests.

In 1905 the next step in the fusion was taken. The Nors Iron Works Company,
Ltd, established in 1881, owner of extensive and valuable forests in Fryksdalen, were
purchased. This company’s industry at the time of the purchase was confined to a
small wood-grinding mill at Torsby, situated at the northernmost end of the Fryken

Lakes, the iron works having been closed down.

In 1906 Billerud and the Slottsbron Company, Ltd were amalgamated in such a

manner that Billerud took over all the shares in the Slottsbron Company. This latter

had already been formed in 1897 by the founder of Billerud, Mr. Lindstedt, on account
of the results obtained in the manufacture of sulphite which were then still brilliant.
