These tracts are generally considered to be the best wooded districts in central
Sweden. The Borgvik and Kyrkebyn Companies have not amalgamated with Billerud,
but are run as independent enterprises, although Billerud owns the majority of the shares.

After the preceding account of the origin and development of the Billerud Company
we now proceed to give a short description of the company’s forests and sources of
power, its mills and manufactures.

FORESTS.

By the various acquisitions of manufacturing estates mentioned in the preceding
paragraphs, the Billerud Company, Ltd. has become possessor of large and valuable
areas of forests. Altogether these cover 115,000 hectares (285,000 acres) of
productive forest-land.

The great part thereof is situated in the west of Yermland, along the courses of the
rivers Byalven and Norsiilven. Most of them are concentrated in large complexes which
are well rounded off. The company’s woodlands are, as a rule, first class. Rational forestry
has been introduced throughout all the company’s forest-properties, which for this
purpose are divided up into six administration districts under the management of
officials who have had a forester’s training.

Although the company receives a steady and valuable supply of timber; it is still
obliged to buy large quantities of round timber from private forest-owners and from
the state forests, in order to fill the different factories’ requirements of raw material.

POWER-STATIONS.

Along with its forest-properties the company has acquired considerable supplies of
water-power, chiefly in the basins of the Glafs Fjord and Lake Varmeln. An
appreciable part of these sources of power has now been mounted and drives the company’s
factories.

The Brandstrommen Power-station is situated on the river Hillringsbergsalven,
3 kms. from Hillringsberg. It delivers 1,100 IIP. The station was erected in 1905.

The Knappstaflagan Power-station stands between the Stora Cfla and Glaakern
Lakes, 9 kms. from Hillringsberg, and supplies 1,500 HP. It was built in 1914—1915.

The Jossefors Power-station is situated near the outlet of the river Jossealven at
the north end of the Glafs Fjord. This station, constructed in 1908, delivers 2,100 HP.
