"THE SWEDISH BANK
OF COMMERCE”

the timber industry. For, looking upon the whole country as an economic unit, there
is in Sweden a certain seasonal rhythm between free funds and demands for credit,
the periods of surplus of funds in the South being counterbalanced by times of a
corresponding need for financial support in the industrial North, and vice-versa.

This latest expansion took place in November 1919, when the Stockholms Han
delsbank, having definitely outgrown a name that gave evidence of its originally local
character, changed its title to “Svenska Handelsbanken" (“The Swedish Bank of
Commerce’) in order to make it represent more adequately the scope of its organisation
as it stands to day, embracing the whole of Sweden.

The accompanying map speaks for itself. It shows how the Bank is represented
through the medium of its own branches in most of the timber-producing and
manufacturing centres, as well as at practically every shipping point. We have already
briefly explained how this branch organisation was built up, and *what it signifies.

As is well known, Swedish timber and timber products have long been established
as much-sought-after commodities in the world market. To.day, when humanity is
turning its attention to the reconstruction of the regions ravaged by the World-war.
they are destined to play a larger rôle than ever.

For all those interested in the financial transactions resulting from the Swedish
Timber export, it should be of value to know something of the uniquely intimate
relations existing between the different industries on which this export is based and the
Svenska Handelsbanken; for, just as the Handelsbank derives much of its strength from
this connection, so, too, the industries in question have derived great benefit from the
excellent foreign business relations of long standing which the metropolitan Bank
brought to the national banking organisation.
