given in the English language, there is also at times a Swedish
school with C. Wigren as instructor.

That part of the settlement which lies west of town 32, range
21, which until 1874 had the same town administration as Marine,
separated said year from that town and organized a town of its
own under the name of Forest Lake and elected its own town
officers. Here also there have been many Swedes who in later
years have built homes. The first Swede to settle here was
Jonas Johnson, who came from Stillwater in 1872. Now there are
about fifteen Swedish families living here. There is no Swedish
church organization as yet, but the settlers are visited at times
by Pastor Lind from Marine, who conducts religious services for
them.

During the later years the immigration from Sweden to the
settlement has not been very large. On the other hand, the
settlement has increased its number by men who have been in
the country for a time and worked in the large pine forests in
the northern part of the State. They are young, industrious and
energetic men, who understand very well how to cultivate a farm.
The settlement has especially increased in the western part of
the town, where one house after the other is being built. The
prosperity of the older settlers has also increased considerably
during the later years, which must be attributed to the great
attention that has been given to farming. In the beginning the
people did not give much thought to the breaking and the
cultivation of the soil. Then they directed their attention almost
entirely to the lumbering industry. They cut and sold so-called
raft material, which was disposed of to the lumber dealers in
Stillwater and Marine. With the destruction of the forests, this
source of income has dried up and, as it now appears, to the
advantage of the people. We have heard that during the last
six years, two-thirds of the settlement’s improved land has been
occupied. More attention has lately also been given to the roads.
New ones have been laid out and old ones improved.

Peace, unity, and harmony have existed between the settlers,
piety dwells in their hearts, contentment and happiness in their
homes, and the blessing of the Most High seems to be with
their undertaking. Everything seems to indicate that the Swedish
settlement Marine can look forward to a calm and secure future.
