ridges of sand that lie around it show that it must have been
very majestic two hundred years ago, when it was visited by
French Jesuits.

Until 1858 S. J. Willard and C. Himmelman had alternated as
justice of the peace, but during this year the town was organized
and the following officers were elected:

Supervisors: Carl Himmelman, chairmen, C. Carlson, Nils
Peterson; town clerk, S. J. Willard; assessor Nils Svenson;
collector Jon Sundell; officer of the poor, M. Mattson; constables,

Nils Johnson and Erick Anderson; justice of the peace, T. G.
Pearson; overseers of roads, P. Petersen, G. Carlson and Fessenden.

S. J. Willard was appointed superintendent of the public
schools in Vasa in 1861, and was later elected county auditor,
to which office he has been re-elected ever since. T. G. Pearson
was county commissioner from 1866 to 1869.

In 1861 a Lutheran church was built, which now, after a
stone basement has been added, is used both as a Swedish grade *
school and as a high school; P. Lindholm, an excellent man, is
the teacher.

MILITARY RECORDS

In spite of her unfavorable condition, Vasa was well
represented in 1861 by the Swedish people, so that the following
volunteers placed themselves under the stars and stripes, to wear
bloody garments for the adopted land and for the 3rd Minnesota
regiment under command of Captain H. Mattson: Olof Anderson,
John A. Anderson, Nils Abrahamson, C. R. Carlson, Halfv&r
Eldund, Olof Fahlin, Paul Paulson, John P. Ofelt, N. Ringdahl,

Carl Roos and G. Swenson.

These eleven neither asked nor accepted any bounty from
their town because of their patriotism. Besides these eleven there
were fifty others from Vasa who went as volunteers to the war
and among these were the following Swedes: Frank Carlson,

V. Freeman, P. Johnson, John Johnson, John Larson, John
M&n-son, J. F. Olson, C. J. Sundell, J. Svan, C. Gustafson, J. H&kanson,

Carl Belin, M. Mattson, 0. Olson, and C. Olson; the rest were of
different nationalities.

A Swedish Methodist church and also a Swedish Baptist
church were built in 1861. During 1871-1872 the new Swedish
