too cold to live here. Meat costs 25 (cents), sugar 45,
coffee 50, potatoes 25, butter $1... The wages are from
2 to 5 dollars a day... My intention waa to go to
Florence: but I don’t want to go there because the place is
quite sickly... When they found the Florence mines last
fall, almost all the people rushed away from here...
There were some who could not earn their board; and
there were thousands who soon hurried back to California
and Oregon. They are discovering new mines daily...
Address (letters) to Portland, Oregon: then I can get them
wherever I want to, whether South or North... Greet the
Pastor from me also... This letter was not dispatched
from here unil the 18th.

Professor T. N. Hasselquist:
The women of the Moline congregation request that the
Synod may grant them suffrage within the congregation.
The intention is that the married as well as the unmarried
shall vote, because, as far as the matters of the soul are
concerned, the woman is not bound to the man.
(36 signatures of married and unmarried ladies follow,
headed by that of Mrs. P. Larson. On a separate sheet is
appended the following:)
I consider it be3t that women are not present at
congregational (business-) meetings, because there might be
too much disturbance in such a case. Instead, if any of
them wants to make a motion, it is better for her to hand
it to the Pastor in writing, before scld meeting. The vote
should then be taken on the succeeding Sunday when the
motions are publicly announced; and the vote should be
by ballot.
