Among the documents from pioneer days which are
published in this issue will be found letters from the
Norelius collection which Dr. Conrad Peterson compiled
and translated for Volume IX of the Year Book, but
which for lack of space could not be included in the
series that appeared in the earlier volume.

The articles on the early Swedish settlements in
Minnesota, which on the initiative of Col. Hans Mattson
were prepared in 1877 by pioneer Swedes in their
respective communities and later published in Minnesota
Stats Tidning, have been compiled and translated by
E. B. Gustafson, a graduate student in history at the
University of Minnesota. In conceiving this plan for a
series of articles written by men who had themselves
played a part in pioneer life, and written at a time when
reliable data could be quite easily obtained, Col. Mattson
showed himself possessed of a remarkably clear
understanding of the historical significance of the events of his
own days. As perhaps no other man among the Swedish
pioneers, with the exception of Dr. Norelius, he realized
the importance of collecting and preserving historical
data. Unfortunately space could this year be provided
for only two of these interesting and from a historical
viewpoint valuable articles. It has then seemed entirely
appropriate that Gronberger’s account of the Marine
settlement and the article on Vasa by Roos should have
