was a part of the program. It seems peculiarly
appropriate that the Vasa community and the Swedish people
throughout the country should have co-operated in
erecting this monument. To the people of Vasa Dr. Norelius
gave, as pastor, many years of consecrated service, and as
the leading historian of the Swedish immigration to
America in the nineteenth century, and as founder of
schools and newspapers, he rendered a notable service to
our people in this country. The Vasa Community and
those Swedes in other parts of the country, who made the
erection of the monument possible have honored
themselves in thus honoring the memory of one of the great
men of our pioneer days. Dr. C. G. Wall emus of Chicago
and Dr. G. A. Andreen of Rock Island were the principal
speakers at the unveiling ceremonies.

The editors of the Year Book find a special pleasure
in making mention of the organization recently of the
Norwegian Historical Society. The new Society has
an important work to do and that it will find strong
support among citizens of Norwegian extraction and be
highly successful in carrying out its program can be
taken for granted. The Norwegians in America have a
large number of men whose scholarly attainments and
historical interest are well proven, and their co-operation
through the medium of the new organization is a
guarantee that this will make valuable contributions to
research in the field of Norwegian American history.
In general plan and purposes the Norwegian Historical
Society is very similar to the Swedish Historical Society.
Its dues have been fixed at $2.00 for annual
membership, $10.00 for sustaining membership, and $100.00 for
