life membership. To begin with a year book will be
published and this will probably appear next March.
It is the hope of the organizers that later on a quarterly
journal can be published. Dr. Theodore C. Blegen,
assistant superintendent of the Minnesota Historical
Society, who is known as an authority in the
Scandinavian American historical field and who has already
made several notable contributions to historical
publications, has been elected editor.

The death of Col. C. A. Smith, which recently
occurred at his home in Berkeley, California, after a
long period of illness, has caused genuine sorrow
throughout the country and especially in Swedish
American circles. Every enterprise that had as its aim
the cultural advancement of his own countrymen in
America or the alleviation of suffering among them
found in him a true friend and to a very large number
of them he was a most generous contributor. Augustana,
Gustavus Adolphus, Bethany, are the higher institutions
of learning founded and supported by the Swedish
people in this country that were the special object of
his interest and benefactions and the splendid Swedish
Hospital in Minneapolis could in its earlier days count
Mr. Smith among its strong supporters. A host of men
who are now leaders in the church and in the teaching
profession were able to secure an education through his
generosity. About fifteen years ago he just casually
happened to tell the writer that he had helped to finance
one hundred and thirty young men and women so that
they could secure a college education. Mr. Smith was
unostentatious in his giving and no one not in his con-
