with the impossible task of reproducing the spirit and
the letter in English. No effort has been made to
accomplish this,—poor English is not the equivalent of
poor Swedish. The translations, therefore, represent
only approximations.
The writer may be pardoned for venturing a suggestion
to those who may read these letters. They are only
specimens of thousands of letters which have been
destroyed or are hidden away, neglected and forgotten,
among the possessions of Swedish-Americans and their
descendants. It is within the power of any one who
may be in the possession of such letters to render a
distinct service to the writing of the history of Swedish
immigration and, indeed, of the United States by
depositing them with Swedish Historical Society of America,
in whose custody they will be spared the ravages of
time and the hazards of irreparable loss. A single letter
may he of little value; in a collection it may be of
inestimable value.
