Rome, Henry County, Iowa, January 7, 1860.

To Jonas P. Zackrison.

That the grace and peace of God may be with you and
with us, is our greeting at the commencement of this year,
beloved relatives.

I am happy to tell you that we are all among the
living and grateful to the Lord for the enjoyment of that
rich blessing, good health, and we hope that these lines
will find you enjoying the same privilege.

In the first place, I am everlastingly thankful to you,
dear brother, for your pains and troubles for me and mine.
I have received three exchanges from Sweden: one in June
to the amount of 338 American dollars; one in August for
399 dollars; and one in December for 397 dollars. Through
the kindness of the Reverend Mr. Peterson these
remittances have reached me promptly, and I beg of you
to extend to him my sincere thanks. May the Lord bless
his important work in both a spiritual and material way.

I will now in all brevity fulfill my promise to keep you
informed about our situation in this remote continent. We
are so exceedingly well satisfied with our emigration from
the fatherland that my pen is powerless to express it.
Contrary to predictions at our departure, we have met no
reverses of any kind. The Lord has indeed wonderfully
guided us through all dangers and troubles, ..... and for
this we should be duly grateful.

No doubt you would like to know something about our
religious life. There is a large Swedish Lutheran church
near our home. We have a zealous and consecrated
pastor who ministers to our spiritual needs, and Pastor
Hasselquist visited us three times last summer. He is one
of our best ministers. He and Pastor Carlsson of Chicago
have been with us during the Christmas season, so we
have had religious services every day, even to the
thirteenth day after Christmas.
