To Oliver and Mary Stephenson.
Dearly beloved sister and brother-in-law: —
I inclose a few lines to let you know that I am in good
health, and I hope that you are enjoying the same
blessing. God grant that we may continue to enjoy the same
blessing. In my last letter I stated that I would not come
to you in America this spring, but now I can inform you
that I intend to leave the last part of May next. It is
entirely possible that I may arrive before this letter and
the money, because money travels slowly to America. But
I thought I would write a few lines in case I do not
arrive ahead of them. I believe, however, that if my health
continues good and if the Lord protects me on the journey
I will arrive before this letter reaches you. The last time
I wrote I stated that we would send 550 rixdaler with
John..... But now we will not send it. I will close this
humble letter with the most cordial greetings to you and
to all. Your relatives send greetings.

New Sweden Mars 14 1861.
Wära kära och af hiertat älskade föräldrar syskon och
släktingar. Guds nåd och frid ware med och öfver både
eder och oss är vår önskan och bön. Och edert bref af
den 22dre November bekom vi Juldagen och vi sir uti dess
glada genomläsande att ni då alla war begåfvade med
den ädla gåfvan helsan. Och wi får älven tacka Gud för
samma goda gåfva....... Och nu vill jag låta eder veta
att vi har haft en ovanlig sträng vinter för jag har aldrig
sitt så mycket snö här forr för här var två fot djup snö
och han varade i nära tri månader men nu är det mycket
vackert väder så att jag tänker att vi får snart begynna
