because an American told me that the employer never paid
his former hands. There was company at J. P. Sandahl’s
when I was there. Uncle Sandahl was there also, so I
rode with him to his home. I have engaged work under
a German by the name of Schmidt, who lives three or
four miles from the Andover church and one mile from
Uncle Sandahls’. I have agreed to work for six months,
receiving fifteen dollars per month for five months and
twenty dollars during harvest. I will begin work tomorrow.
I am writing this letter at Sandahls’. They send
their regards and would like to see you. I showed them
your picture. There are three Swedish boys and a
Swedish girl where I am going to work, but I don’t like that
because I won’t have the opportunity to learn to speak
English. I will let you know how I like the place ....
I was in the notion of going to war. Many Swedes are
going. It was my intention to help Lincoln, but I was
dissuaded. I have many things to tell you which I cannot put
on paper. If I could talk with you I would tell you more
than I am able to write ......
