Christmas. They live 120 miles from here—a day’s journey by
rail.

I have been working here since March 31st and have
earned sixteen dollars per month, but at present I am
working by the day—wages one dollar per day. I will
probably work here all winter. This is an unusually good
section. It has been settled a long time, and the houses
are large and fine and the trees flourishing. Crops are
good with the exception of wheat, which was damaged
by a sort of pest called “hugs” which have entirely
destroyed it in many places. The prices of farm products
are the same as in Iowa.

There is one thing I dislike about America: the
summers are exceedingly hot and the winters are the other
extreme. We are having fine weather now, but the weather
is so changeable. One day it is so hot and the next so
cold that four or five coats are necessary. Last summer
we had a tornado. I was out in the field ploughing when
I saw the wind coming toward me. I lay prostrate on the
ground, but I was caught up several times, and the air
was so full of dust that it looked like snow.

I am thinking of going to California next spring.
Several are going from here. The climate out there is much
better. I am not so sure, however, that we can get
through on account of the war. There is a great deal of
disturbance in this country. In Minnesota the savages
have risen up and killed young and old. They crucified
some of their victims. Some of our countrymen have
experienced this horror. In this state we have been spared,
for which we are grateful to God, who is our refuge and
strength in the misfortunes which have befallen us.
Knowing this, we are not dismayed. Because of sin there must
he many changes. People are punished because of
wickedness. Pride goeth before a fall. The Prince of Peace must
be sought before peace can triumph. We trust in him.
Our souls wait upon the Lord; he is our help and strength.

I must close for this time, I send my love to you, my
parents, relatives, friends, and acquaintances. I hope you
